Improvements to modern chastity belt designs.By Fax Machine - Sept '98
========================================================================
I am writing this text in the hope that I can help both the users and the designers of modern chastity belts address some of the flaws in the belts available on the market today. I want the potential users of the chastity belts to be aware of the comfort and security issues I feel are apparent, and would like the designers to be made aware that their product does need more work if they are to satisfy the demands made upon them. When you buy a modern chastity belt you are making a sexual fantasy a sexual reality. The question of just how real you want to make a scene comes up in many areas of sexual experimentation and play: Reality brings with it discomforts which are glossed over while the dream is still in your mind, but can also bring tremendous satisfaction, (or in the case of CBs, the exact opposite, frustration, which of course is just what you want). However, it also brings with it many tricky logistical problems for the designer, and many costly decisions for the potential user. This document, although purportedly aiming to report improvements which need to be made to modern CBs, can also, with only a small shift of focus, be read as a discussion of the failings of the devices which are currently available. It is therefore important to the author, that people who may already own the belts under discussion do not have their fantasy spoilt, eg: if it turns out that their belt was not as secure as they thought it was. Many, when they really think about it, do not *want* to escape from their belts, and certainly do not want to read about how to do it. For example, a number of documents regarding lock picking have been shown to me, and I have always resisted reading them even though I was interested, because without the *knowledge* of how to circumvent a padlock I can still enjoy being locked up with it. It can be the same with chastity belts. While this document steers clear of giving specific methods of defeating modern chastity belts, it lists many areas where the belts could be improved. This will, by definition, mean that a particular area is a weakness in the particular design and could lead to the disappointment of a current user. I therefore *strongly* advise anyone who does not wish to know the weaknesses in their belt not to read any further. So, if I don't want to risk spoiling anyone's chastity belt fantasy, why then am I writing this article? Surely it would be a great deal safer to just keep quiet? This document came about for two reasons: Firstly, I was asked to write a document about my negative experiences with my male chastity belts, and secondly, I was concerned that buyers were not getting enough critical information concerning the available belts. These devices cost a large amount of money, and many potential users have to save to be able to afford one. If you combine this, with the anticipation that a long wait for fabrication can create, you can imagine the disappointment for the user if the device does not function as expected. These reasons have made me write this article, I hope that the negative tone does not put off potential users but does inform them of the current state of the art. These designs are after all some of the very best that are available on the market today, and the text here is simply my opinion. Introduction.I own a number of chastity belts but this discussion will revolve around the Tollyboy and Walter Goethals designs for a male, though there is still some information here relevant to the female versions as well. All of the following are my own personal opinions, and are based on my own experiences and analysis of these two belts. To begin on a positive note, it is clear to me that the serious modern devices are all reasonably well constructed, take into account differing body shapes, and most importantly of all, actually succeed in their primary aim: that of to be effective in preventing sexual intercourse. This is no mean feat in itself. However, most users of modern belts are less interested in the ensuring of fidelity than their ancestors, and more interested with the denial of *any* sexual pleasure for the wearer. This part of the fantasy is a far more difficult design challenge for the belt makers than the prevention of intercourse. In the rest of this document, the word security should be taken to mean both the physical soundness of the device, and its ability to perform the above objective. The second design challenge faced by the modern belt makers is no less important, since the fantasy generally requires that the device be worn for a certain length of time. This fact raises comfort and general wearability as a major problem to be solved by any serious chastity belt. I repeat: only the Tollyboy design and Walter Goethals belts are considered here. It is the author's opinion that thus far, these are the only serious modern chastity belts on the market. There are many other inferior belts available but currently none of these come close to addressing the two major design issues of security and comfort. There are also many other chastity devices and methods available, however this article considers only chastity belts. It is also worth mentioning that it is not an exhaustive list of problems needing improvement, just those which the author has come across. Hal Tollyboy chastity belt design.The following text includes the William Jones chastity belt, the Access Denied chastity belt and the NeoSteel belt, all of which are direct copies of the original Tollyboy design with some minor changes in design. The author's experience:My first experience of a quality stainless steel chastity belt, the William Jones, gave me a great deal of pleasure for a number of weeks, and then it arrived. My chastity belt was insecure pretty much from the start and so my fantasy was ended there. My initial impression was of a beautiful looking belt which blew away in an instant anything which I had made or bought before that time. Once installed, I was aware that it was particularly uncomfortable for me to wear, but something which I might be able to get used to. However after about only 5 minutes I discovered that it was possible for me to remove myself from the tube, thus making the comfort issues entirely academic, I was not going to bother getting used to wearing a belt which was insecure. Over the years I have given it many 'second chances' with varying degrees of success. I have tried many different settings and physical adjustments to the belt, but cannot find a way of wearing it which allows it to perform its function. While I accept that I am probably the wrong body type to have success with this design of belt, I am not happy with its general security level overall as you will see in the following analysis. However, this is not to say that I feel I entirely wasted my money on the belt, but it does leave me thinking that this belt has serious flaws which need to be addressed by the designers. General comments:The first thing to say about this male chastity belt is that it is clearly a simple conversion job from the female belt design. Eg: It surprises many when they are told that female users can actually try out a male's belt. However, with the simple unhooking of the penis tube there is no important difference between the two types of belt. Any engineers reading this will instantly see that this redesign was a bit of a 'quick and dirty' solution, and that it is likely to lead to problems when the device is worn by males. We are dealing here with exactly the parts of the body which define our sexes, and so it is more than a little surprising to find that this belt is the almost same for both. Ironically however, it is the differences in our hips which seem to cause some of the greatest problems for this belt design. Females should find this a very good design, and so it should be, since it was designed for them. Males should be careful, since this belt does not take into account any of their 'maleness' apart from a penis tube which is, in the author's opinion, poorly attached onto a basically female design belt. Waist belt:The waist band of the Tollyboy design is a simple oval hoop of stainless steel. Since it must contain the screw threads of the locking posts, it has had to be made from a reasonably thick piece of stainless steel, which means that it is of a good quality, and a good solid weight. On the female, it rests on top of the hip bones and does not need to be very tight, since the female hips are that much wider than the male. This allows the belt to be very comfortable. Males must first find their natural waist, since for most users the belt will have no hope of working without it. This can be an impossible search for those who have not been able to see their feet for a number of years, and will even be a difficult task for those who are just starting to grow a belly. The waist belt, will end up a little higher than your navel, where it can restrict both eating and to a lesser extent, breathing. It is very uncomfortable for all but the athletically built. All the producers of the Tollyboy design insist in their literature and communications that the belt must be fitted at the natural waist of the user. This presumably means the belt is prevented from being pushed downwards by bone structure rather than by tissue, however some users have ignored this and still made the belt function. Personally, I believe that since the waist band is designed for the female anatomy, rather than the male, and a redesign of this part of the belt, possibly utilising a lower position and contoured shape, would significantly improve both its comfort and security. Front Shield and chains:The front shield of the belt is made from a much thinner piece of metal than the waist belt. Personally I was very disappointed by this, since for me, part of the fantasy is to be locked in a rather big piece of ironmongery. The engineer in me was alarmed at just how easy it was to bend this front piece, even with your fingers. I believe this part of the belt is simply *too thin*. Using the thickness used in the steel of the waist belt would be an improvement. However, it is under the front shield where the design choice of converting the female belt for use by the male comes to a head. Firstly, it allows no space whatsoever for the testicles, splitting them up on either side of the penis tube and forcing them back into their prepubescent sockets. Secondly, the penis must be held down and backwards, again with no space designed beneath the front shield to contain it. If the tube is worn higher up, then it is often a very simple matter indeed to extricate the penis from the device, and some users can pull themselves out of the penis tube, whatever position it is in. The reason for the congestion beneath the front shield of the Tollyboy male design, is that the shield is only bent in only one dimension. It is simply a flat piece of metal cut to shape and bent into a simple curve. This might be acceptable for the female version, but it does not take an expert to see that the male creature requires a little more complexity. In fact some have converted their male Tollyboys to move the penis tube to the outside of the front shield, which seams the more sensible place to put it. The so called 'Australian Belt' shows what could, and should be done with the front shield of the male belt, its curves in two dimensions create space beneath the front shield for the male genitalia, space which is simply lacking in the Tollyboy male design. The chains which connect the front shield to the waist belt are connected by D rings. For some reason all the manufacturers which use them seem to use D rings which are split, even though the way they are actually attached to belt would allow for the easy insertion of a solid D ring at the time of fabrication. In my experience, even with simple leather bondage, split D rings are weak spots which can ruin a otherwise quality bit of kit. Now, the Tollyboy design prides itself of being stainless steel, but these rings, it transpires were *not* on the Jones belt and Access Denied belts, (possibly on the original Tolly boy and NeoSteel belts too), and have actually began to rust in some cases. To be fair, Access Denied have now offered a stainless steel alternative, though I do not believe it is supplied as standard. Comfort:The reason stainless steel is the ideal material for a modern chastity belt, is partly so that it will not be affected by the rigours of long term wear. The belts based on the Tollyboy design are the best suited for this application due to their accessibility for cleaning and simple elegant lines. However, in my opinion they are sorely let down, for males at least, by comfort issues. These belts at the very best take a great deal of getting used to, and many have reported that at first they seemed to be unwearable. Even after getting used to the belt, bending forward is almost impossible, leaving some users to explain their 'back problems' to their workmates. The male Tollyboy design's success relies on whether the user, and perhaps more importantly, the user's body, can get used to its lack of gender specific design. If he can find a natural waist and put up with the tightness of the waist belt then it is a start. If he can also cope with having his genitalia crushed beneath him then the belt will work fine. In fact, the only way this belt can successfully be worn long term is by shaping the front shield by hand to allow *some* extra space for the testicles and penis tube. This will lead to problems if a thicker piece of steel is used. Making this design more gender specific will eliminate most of the problems I have outlined above. Improvements already made to the Tollyboy design:The companies which produce the Tollyboy design male belt have addressed some of the problems associated with it. It has already been mentioned that Access Denied offer to replace the lower D ring to prevent urine from causing it to rust. In fact, the improvements made to the original design have dramatically improved certain aspects of the belt, and the recent increase in competition in this market may well lead to further attempts at solving the problems which everyone who owns this design belt is surely aware of. Hal Tollyboy himself was the first to improve upon his own design (partly in response to the competition from Bill Jones). He introduced a round, screw type vending machine lock to the front of the belt. A fantastic improvement, which not only increased security, but made the belt easier to produce. It remains only available on the original Tollyboy belts, which hopefully will be being produced again, (in the same quality), in the near future. Access Denied's major contribution, apart from a general increase in the quality available in US made belts, was the replacement of the neoprene edging on the belt for a complete covering in plastisol. Again, this addressed a major problem, since the rubber simply would not stay on the older belts properly. (It also presumably saves them a great deal of time which would otherwise have been spent polishing). NeoSteel have come up with a better designed penis tube. While this does not address the congestion under the front shield, (and almost certainly makes it worse), it does allow the penis to be held higher up, and if you are lucky, might prevent removal. It also underlines the fact that this is a common problem for this design of belt. Unfortunately all the above would leave a user, intent on getting the very best design, to have to buy a NeoSteel tube to fit to a Tollyboy belt which has been sent to AD to be covered in plastic! Hardly practical, and would of course be very expensive. Conclusion:My final opinion, and I do not take this position lightly, is that the above companies have tried their best to solve some of the issues raised by wearers of the belt, but critically, this leaves the major underlying problems unaddressed, for they would require a complete redesign of the front shield and waist, if not the whole belt. I take this view, partly because I have never had any luck with my own Tollyboy style belt, (and would give it away to a female rather than a male), and partly due to the following: It is the author's opinion that there is simply no reason to put up with, and get used to the comfort problems of a belt, if that belt does not provide enough security. The amount of security needed will vary from user to user but should be urgently improved upon: Two of the defects listed above compromise the design so significantly, that it would be possible to remove and reinstall yourself using *no tools whatsoever*. Walter Goethals chastity belt design.It should be said that the Walter Goethals chastity belt was the first attempt at designing a belt specifically for the male, and it is ironic that his female version is clearly a straight conversion from it, the exact opposite to the situation with the Tollyboy design. Interestingly, his female belt seems to be a more successful conversion, which would go to show that you can simplify a male belt to make it suitable for female, but you cannot complicate a female belt to make it work for a male. This would also make a certain amount of sense considering the internal and external nature of our respective genitalia. The author's experience:My own Walter belt almost worked perfectly for me. Straight out of the box it was comfortable enough to wear long term, and it was only after I tested it out fully did I realise that I could escape from it. The means of escape was not as simple for me as with my Jones (Tollyboy style) belt, and indeed it took me a number of days before I found the method by which I could circumvent it. However this delay might merely be due to my earlier disappointment with the Jones: it is very possible that I did not test this belt out too hard too fast for fear of the disappointment which I knew would follow. Like with the Jones belt, I have tried every way of wearing the belt, and adjusted and added to the design where I thought I could make it work for me. Since the belt was so nearly perfect, it was all the more frustrating when I finally admitted that I could not make the belt secure. As with the Jones belt, once I had ruined the fantasy for myself by escaping, there was nothing of interest left for me in wearing the device, and so it too collects dust in the bedroom cupboard. Comfort:Interestingly, the Walter belt sacrifices security for comfort. Its large diameter penis tube is in fact so comfortable, that some have reported that they been able to rock themselves to orgasm without even removing the apparatus. However these reports are unusual, and so my point is, that comfort and wearability were major concerns when the belt was designed. However the comfort of this belt is still compromised in two ways: Firstly, the tube forces the legs slightly apart. In the Tollyboy belt you can stand and lie with them pretty much together but, the Walter Goethals design places the testicles on either side of the penis tube which makes it almost impossible to close your legs fully. This can be a problem when sleeping and does even interfere with walking to a lesser degree, but it must be emphasised that the design is nowhere near as restrictive as the Tollyboy (male), when it comes to moving around. Secondly, and far more importantly, the front plate can press very hard into the abdomen, especially when sitting. Like most comfort and security issues, this varies from person to person. Some, like myself, find the belt perfectly comfortable at all times, while others feel that it pressed inwards with such force that it caused actual harm to their abdominal wall. Security:The security of the device is maintained by making sure that the entrance to the penis tube is, at all times, pressed into the abdomen. This has caused problems for some, whereby over a number of days the penis has become swollen due to internal fluid movements being restricted. This problem has made the belt unwearable for these users. The author cannot really comment, since he was unaffected by the problem. However it should be noted that the two health issues mentioned above are important enough to state again as warnings to any potential user of this belt, and it is worth stating that there are no real comparisons with the Tollyboy design which has many more users worldwide and has had less health warnings. Returning to physical security, again we see disappointingly thin steel, though this time, all over the belt. Only the penis tube, and the small front shield seem to be solid, the rest of the belt looks almost thin enough to fatigue with use, (possibly even when taking off and putting on). There are a number points on the belt at which the whole thing is held together by 1.5mm width steel only 4mm wide. Since the chastity belt relies on the integrity of every part, a weak link such as this really does reduce the overall security of the belt, and could easily be improved upon. Waist Belt:The belt is very well padded with foam. However this in itself provides a security weakness, since the belt seems to partly rely on it to stay in position on the hips. Removal would surely be equivalent to opening the belt straps by a notch, which might well compromise the security of the design for some users. The waist belt itself uses a contoured design, which must be the envy of every male Tollyboy owner. The comfort and ease of movement provided by this design is unparalleled in a modern chastity belt. However, like the Tollyboy, the whole thing becomes insecure if the waist belt is moved off the hip bones. Unfortunately, the contoured design makes this belt easier to slip off the hips, which, in the case of the author, instantly maked the whole belt insecure. It seems that this belt although it does not appear to do so, does in fact rely on the natural waist for security as well. While different body types may have different experiences, in this respect the Walter belt has certainly sacrificed the security of the Tollyboy design in favour of comfort. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since wearablity was the second major design issue to be tackled by the belts. It all depends whether the belt still works for the particular user with this comfort feature in the design. Front shield and general comments:The design of the penis tube on the Walter belt makes the testicles hang on either side of the front tube which can reduce comfort, however more importantly it also means that either side of the tube is soft flesh which can be easily prodded and probed until a finger can be inserted underneath the penis. While this is acceptable when the belt is preventing the tube from being pulled away from the body, if such a thing does occur, you would be in the perfect place to begin to extricate your self from the confines of the penis tube. The locking plate on the standard male chastity belt relies on a hinged flap, which like all of the joints on the belt is hand made and welded. If I were attempting to forceably break the belt, I would start here. This is especially true of the deluxe version, where I understand the padlock which is nicely covered behind a metal knob in the standard belt, is left with no protection whatsoever. There is a great deal of welding on the belt. This is of course due to the complexity of the design, but there is still a little too much for my liking. It would only take one poor weld (not the easiest thing to do in stainless steel anyway) for the whole thing to fall apart in your hands. While this did not happen to mine, I have heard that it has happened, and look with a little suspicion at the welds on my own belt. I think I would certainly list the multiple welds as a weakness with this design, since complexity in itself is not a justification for the number of joins in a belt, and I would hope that a successor would be able to design out at least some of them. Conclusion:Overall, the Walter belt is a remarkably well designed and complex attempt at a male chastity belt. I personally had a great deal more luck with it than with my Tollyboy style belt. However it is possible to remove yourself from the tube, if you can first slip your hips from the waist belt, which means that like for the Tollyboy, certain body types are just going to be unlucky from almost the outset. In the final instance, looking at the belt as a whole, it turns out that it is almost as insecure as the Tollyboy design, and does require more work. If the security could be increased without a corresponding increase in discomfort this would be a major improvement. As it stands now, it *would* require some simple tools to remove the belt, but not a whole toolbox. Modern Chastity belts conclusion:I recognise I have been very hard on the belts mentioned in this review and I make no apologies for this, there is plenty of positive information concerning them on the internet and, when it was put to me, I agreed with the idea that a more critical position would help people to decide which direction they might want to go when making a purchase. My intention was to move right past advocacy and look for where the belts could be improved, and what the potential user of the belts has to be made aware of before committing their hard earned cash. I have read (and indeed written) too many positive articles in which the belts were not tested out to their limits. However having been so critical, it is natural for the reader to wonder which, of the two belts that I considered is actually the one I would recommend buying. My advice is simple. Take some time, (preferably when your brain is not too pickled in hormones), and work out where you want to take your fantasy. If you just want an occasional plaything you would not really be reading this article, so you must be at least a little serious, and just how serious you are depends on where you stand on the fantasy/reality scale. Many users can make up for the physical shortcomings of their belts with fantasy, and do not even consider the need to work out how to defeat them. As you will have gathered, I want the experience to be a great deal more real than that: I want thicker steel and a guarantee that I would have to completely destroy the belt to get it off me. This is one extreme, and I must be honest in saying that I do not think that there is a belt on the market which comes close to this. However, In my opinion both of the belts mentioned here are worth buying, and both gave me some pleasure. The Tollyboy design is simple, elegant and quite easy to obtain, taking only 6 weeks to deliver. The Walter Goethals belt is an admirable attempt at a solution to the problem, which for some can provide both comfort *and* security. Whichever you decide to buy, the success you have with it, will be based almost entirely upon your body type. Those without any gut and a larger sized member will do okay with the Tollyboy design, otherwise the Walter is probably the best way to go. Either way, I recommend you do not test the belts too far to their limits, leave that to your fantasies.
